The Letter to the Ephesians

By Dr. William Barclay

Among Paul's letters, the letter to the Ephesians undoubtedly holds a unique and unrivaled place; it may be said that Ephesians stands highest among them. Ephesians and Colossians are very similar. We hold that Paul wrote Colossians to counter the spread of false teachings in the church at Colossae, and it was there that he magnificently declared the absolute sufficiency of Christ. Ephesians is the one letter Paul sent to all the churches of the East to tell them that human beings — and all things in the universe — find their unity in Christ, and that the church's great mission is to be Christ's instrument for this universal peace and reconciliation, a peace established between people and between humanity and God. That is why Ephesians is the queen of Paul's letters.
