Protestant Biblical Interpretation

By Bernard Ramm

Perhaps nothing throughout history has damaged Christianity more than the misinterpretation and misunderstanding of the Bible, and this remains true in our own day. Many doctrinal disputes and divisions have arisen from a failure to understand the verses of God's Word correctly. For this reason ministers of God's holy Word must not only know its content precisely, but also know well the sound principles of its interpretation and right understanding. The present book is one of the standard works in the field of biblical interpretation, an authoritative and valuable text that, though written decades ago, is still respected among scholars. Dr. Bernard Ramm published it in 1950 and later revised it twice. After a historical survey of the development of interpretation, the author discusses the discipline in detail within the Protestant tradition, then considers the use of the Bible in forming theology and in devotional and practical life. Following a discussion of the theological dimensions of biblical inerrancy and the sciences, he devotes chapters to types, prophetic material, and parables. Dr. Bernard Ramm was a distinguished professor at theological schools in America and wrote more than twenty books, most in the fields of theology and philosophy.
